NUSANTARA WELCOMES MARKING OF NON-ALIGNED MOVEMENT JUBILEE IN BELGADE

Association of Serbian-Indonesian Friendship “Nusantara” has welcomed the decision of Member States of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) in Indonesia to gather at the meeting in Belgrade in early September, to mark the 50th Anniversary of the NAM.

At the same time, we want to congratulate to the host country, the Republic of Indonesia, on a very good organization of the 16th Ministerial Conference of NAM held in the period from 23rd to 27th May, marking the half century since the birth of a movement that has become the conscience of humanity in international politics and contributed to establishing a more equitable relationship in the world and ending the Cold War between the superpowers in the late 20th century.

Marking the golden jubilee of the first NAM summit in Belgrade in the period from 1st to 6th September will be a unique opportunity for senior representatives of member states to gather again in the city and country where the movement has begun the decades of its action and pay tribute to the wisdom, vision and statesmanship of its founders.

The celebration in Belgrade may be an opportunity for Serbia and Belgrade, which were the centre of NAM, giving a huge contribution to its development and progress till the early 1990s, to restore and strengthen the relations and economic cooperation with 120 member countries representing almost two-thirds of the countries in the world and half the population of our planet.

NAM meeting, which after this week’s ministerial conference in Bali, has two new members: Fiji and Azerbaijan, was attended by 18 countries observers, including all former Yugoslav republics that have not joined the European Union, 10 international organizations and dozens of invited guest countries. NAM members are the largest bloc within the United Nations and most of them have not recognized the unilaterally proclaimed independence of Kosovo. Therefore, Serbian should keep cultivating relationships with such a large number of countries, while using diplomatic means to solve the problem of its southern province.

The Belgrade meeting in September could be an opportunity for Serbia to improve relations with the non-aligned countries, given the fact that the international stability and prosperity cannot be strengthened without taking into account the attitudes of the most of the international communities.

This is extremely important because of the fact that was pointed out by the President of Indonesia, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, opening the ministerial meeting in Bali – new strategic rivalries while humanity is preoccupied with the complex challenges including terrorism and religious conflicts.

“Whenever possible, we should encourage a constructive process of security cooperation, to make enemies become friends, and friends partners,” said President Yudhoyono.

“Nusantara” believes that the NAM meeting in Belgrade in September could be a step toward creating such an atmosphere in international relations.
